FAQ

Frequently asked questions about protection and surveillance with the Profort GSM units.

Installation

The unit does not work.
Turn off the unit. Insert the SIM card in a mobile phone and set the password to ‘1234’. Test with a text message till or from another mobile phone at the installation area.
Return the SIM card to the unit. Turn on the unit.
Send a text message: ‘1234 OK’. The unit will answer with: ‘1234 OK SQ: xx%’. If SQ is less than 25%, install an external antenna.

The unit ‘beeps’ every 15 sec. and does not send an alarm?
The SIM card can have a wrong PIN code in relation to the unit. Turn off the unit. Insert the SIM card in a mobile phone and set the password to ‘1234’ (PUK may be necessary).
Return the SIM card to the unit. Turn on the unit.

What does it mean that the red LED is lit?

If the red LED lamp is lit, it means that the unit either has received an instruction and is ready to perform it, or that it is about to send an alarm.
The unit starts up, sends 4 ‘beeps’ and flashes immediately after.

The unit does not communicate with the SIM card.
Control that the card points the right way – with the cut-off corner in the top right (the text on the card is usually turned upside down).

Cable

What type of cable do I use for an external antenna?
Preferably use a 2 m extension cord to the GSM modem. Be aware that the signal strength weakens by use of a longer cable.

Why will my PC not communicate with the unit?
Probably because the COM-port of the PC is not correctly noted in the program. Check which COM-port the PC uses in Windows control panel. Enter the installation program in ‘settings’/ ‘Modem/com. port’ and enter the correct value. (USB–>RS232 adapter often uses COM-port 4).

Which type of cable do I use to connect the PC with the unit?
Use RS 232 cable. An extension cord in which the wires go straight through.

Codes

Does it make a difference if I change the PIN code or the password first?
Yes, manually. If you start with changing the PIN code for the SIM card, you need to change the password for the unit yourself. However, if you start with changing the password for the unit, the PIN to the SIM card will automatically change so that the PIN and password are the same.

What is a ‘product key’?
The product key is indicated on the front cover of the installation CD and it opens the ‘Quick Set-up Program’ by default. When upgrading to more functions, a new product key will be necessary.

What is an ID code?
The ID code consists of 4 characters (text or numbers). It identifies the unit which transmits an alarm message. If you set up an ID code, this will automatically be transmitted with the alarm to the receiver. If no ID code is chosen, the unit will use the password as ID code.

What is a password?
The password is a 4-digit code to the unit. These 4 characters are from the beginning 1234 (default). Preferably should be changed to a self-chosen password. All commands to the unit must start with the defined password. If the PIN code request on the SIM card is deactivated, or the password is changed to 0000, the commands are sent without password.

What is a PIN code?
The PIN code is a 4-digit code to the SIM card. If the default PIN of the SIM card is not set to 1234 the code has to be changed to this when setting up the SIM card. You also get a chance to deactivate the PIN code request.

How do I change the PIN code/password?
Send a text message to the unit: ‘1234 N0 (the mobile number of the unit) (new PIN code)’, e.g. ‘1234 N0 99999999 4321’ (0=zero).

How do I check if the PIN code is correct?
Place the SIM card from the GSM modem in a GSM mobile phone to see whether any contact to the GSM network can be established.

I have changed the SIM card PIN code – why does the unit not react?
Before the unit can carry out a command the PIN code and password must be identical. If you have changed the PIN of the SIM card it is necessary for you to change the password for the unit as well.

Does password and PIN code have to be identical?
Yes, technically the password and PIN code are the same thing. If you start changing the PIN of the SIM card it is necessary for you to change the password to the unit as well so that the PIN and the password are the exact same.

multiGuard® Basic

Does multiGuard® Basic remember its original settings?
Yes. By using the multiGuard Basic software the data files are logged in an index. The index makes it possible to reinstall previous settings, e.g. in cases where a new multiGuard Basic system in settings needs to be identical with the original system.

What is the difference between multiGuard® Light and multiGuard® Basic?
multiGuard Basic can function as a wireless system, that means communicate with wireless transmitters (detectors, remote controls, personal alarms, etc.). multiGuard Light is a technical, not a wireless system and is therefore not able to communicate with transmitters. However, note that multiGuard Basic and multiGuard Light both transmit alarm via the GSM network.

What is multiGuard® Basic software?
With the multiGuard Basic sofware (software basic) follows an index with data files, that is, logged information about how multiGuard Basic has been programmed previously. This is advantagous for those new multiGuard Basic systems that need to be programmed in the exact same way.

How is multiGuard® Basic programmed?
Programming of multiGuard Basic can be done from a GSM mobile phone or preferably from a PC by using multiGuard Basic software (software basic).

Set-up

How do I make the unit repeat an alarm?
Aktivate ‘time-controlled status’ with command: < TP M 0030> after the alarm text on the input. Remember to deactivate again with <TP> after the OK text.

How do I make the unit control the heat in my summer residence?
Read: Alarm and heat control.

Why does the unit not react to a text message?
When you send instructions to the unit from a GSM mobile phone, always remember to start with the (correct) password (4 digits) followed by a space.

Can more multiGuard®s be connected?
Yes. If more multiGuards are connected the inputs on unit 1 just need to reflect the outputs on unit 2.

Can I receive an alarm message on email via PC?
Yes, technically. But it depends on which telephone operator you use. Ask your operator if your SIM card supports this service, and ask for the telephone number used for this service. Notice that the email address must not exceed 31 characters.

Does GSM modem work with a prepaid card?
Yes, but we recommend SIM card, for instance one without subscription. A prepaid card for GSM telephones can give problems since it normally expires after a year.

Can the unit send information from my PLC?
Yes, if you connect a PLC to the RS232-port, an ASCII sequence is transmitted with a 9600 baud of max. 160 characters completed with a CR+LF, and the text will be send in a text message to the list of receivers.

Can I receive an alarm if my water consumption gets abnormally high?
(FW 8.17) Connect a water sensor with a pulse to input 1 and set the input to ‘pulse counter’. Set the top limit for 15 minutes of normal consumption in the field ‘close’, empty field in ‘open’ and set it to zone 1. Enter the text ‘<UN>’ in the field ‘open’ on an available input and set ‘Status’ to ‘T 0001’ (counter is reset every 15 minutes). Add a mobile number to the receiver list with zone 1 and enter the unit’s own mobile phone number (it is necessary in order to set the clock).

How do I reset all data in the unit?
Send text message: ‘1234 P!’ OBS: all data will be deleted and the set-up must be done again!!!

Programming

What is the Quick Set-up Program?
The Quick Set-up Program (software quick) is a software that comes with a purchase of multiGuard Light. Connect the RS232 output of the unit with the COM-port on a PC by a standard 9-pin serial extension cable, or use a USB as RS232 serial converter. Adjust the COM-port no. in the Quick Set-up. For many settings the Basic Set-up is recommended.

How is multiGuard Light programmed?
Programming and reprogramming of the unit:
Via the serial COM-port on the PC and the Quick Set-up Program.
Via text message from a GSM mobile phone to the unit (see code summary in the operating manual).
Via text message from a PC.

Can I program multiGuard Light from any PC I prefer?
YES. All Windows PCs from Win-95 to Vista can run the program.

Can I program the unit from a mobile phone?
Yes. All parametres can also be sent as text messages. This is described further in the manual.
With the Basic Set-up Program and a GSM modem connected to the PC you can program the unit remotely.

Does the program support Windows Vista?
Yes – Right click on ‘setup.exe’ and ‘run as administrator’. When the installation finds existing files – keep the newest version.

Power Failure

Will an alarm be sent in case of power failure?
Yes. If the unit is provided with a RECHARGEABLE 9V battery. (NB: is only fully charged after approx. 24 hours) Alarm is sent by default after ½ an hour without power.

Alarm in case of power failure will be sent only after approx. ½ an hour?
Mark the option ‘send power alarm immediately’ in the program or send a text message to the unit: ”xxxx JS” (xxxx=PIN code). An alarm will be sent shortly after a power failure that takes more than 30-60 sec. It can be necessary to restart the unit before the change is activated (turn the power on and off – also the backup battery).

Voice

How do I record a message?
Call the unit and do as follows:

  1. Wait for 1 tone
  2. Enter PIN code (example: 1234)
  3. Wait for 2 tones
  4. Enter #8 (opens for general message)
  5. Wait for 1 tone
  6. Record general message: fx ‘Alarm from ???’ (max. 6 sec.)
  7. Wait for 2 tones
  8. Enter #0 (opens for message at input 0)
  9. Wait for 1 tone
  10. Record alarm message: e.g. ‘alarm from 0’ (max. 6 sec).
Repeat step 7-10 and enter #1-#7 for the other inputs.
  11. Hang up

Can an alarm message go directly to alarm receiver equipment?
Yes. In order to receive alarm message as analog call with DTMF tones send following text message:
‘1234 N1 +45xxxxxxxx *’ (PIN code = fx 1234 receiver = e.g. no. 1).
The alarm will be sent in so-called ‘IBS tone frequence’.

Can I interrupt the call list in case of alarm?
Yes. By call with voice message the person taking the call can acknowledge with # (hashtag) during the voice message. Thereby, the call will not be forwarded to other numbers on the list.

Can I get different voice messages for ‘closing’ and ‘opening’ on an input?
Yes. Set up the unit to send ‘different voice messages for close and open’ with the text: ‘1234 W2’ (PIN code = e.g. 1234).

Then, call the unit and enter the PIN code. After 2 ‘beeps’, enter #(0-7) for input 0 to 7. After 1 ‘beep’, record voice message for open position (max. 3 sec.) and after next ‘beep’, record message for closed position (max. 3 sec.). Hang up.

Can I receive voice messages on landline or GSM mobile phone?
Yes. In order to receive analog calls on landline or GSM mobile phone, send text: ‘1234 N1 +45xxxxxxxx #”’ (PIN code = e.g. 1234 receiver = e.g. no. 1).
